"Pátria ou morte": a revolução cubana e a crise dos anos 1990

This article aims to analyze the survival conditions of the cuban political regime from the end of the cold war, during the “Special Period”. The breakdown of the socialist bloc between 1989 and 1991 certainly represented an important change of direction for the Cuban Revolution and generated an economic crisis of great proportions, which put at risk the very permanence of the revolutionary regime. However, it was allowed to survive - despite the diffi cult inner and outer conditions and the frequent contrary predictions – to its most delicate moment since the origin in 1959. Although there was a plan for economic reforms and policies to a lesser extent, the survival of the regime was bounded to its nationalistic appeal, what was the political legitimacy before the socialism crisis, as well as the defense of the social achievements of the 30 years of the revolutionary regime.O objetivo deste artigo é analisar as condições da sobrevivência do regime político cubano a partir do fi m da guerra fria, durante o chamado “Período Especial”. O desmoronamento do campo socialista entre 1989 e1991 certamente representou uma infl exão nos rumos da Revolução Cubana e precipitou uma crise econômica de grandes proporções, colocando em risco a própria continuidade do regime revolucionário. No entanto, este pôde sobreviver, sob as mais difíceis condições internas e externas - apesar dos frequentes prognósticos contrários – ao seu momento mais delicado desde sua origem em 1959. Ainda que um plano de reformas econômicas, e em menor medida políticas, fosse considerado, os fatores que explicaram esta sobrevivência estariam ligados ao apelo nacionalista do regime cubano, como fonte de legitimação política frente à crise do socialismo, juntamente com a defesa das conquistas sociais alcançadas ao longo de 30 anos do regime revolucionário
